Westmount Old Timers Hockey Tournament
December 3 to 7, 2025
We are bringing you this year the 34th edition of the Westmount Old Timers Hockey Tournament which was initiated in 1989 by Members of the Senior Westmount Allstar Team ("SWAT") to bring together teams from various regions to compete in a friendly Charity Tournament. The idea was inspired by Nicolas W. Matossian, a young patient at The Montreal Children’s Hospital ("MCH") diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, who, believing in the urgent need to fight pediatric cancer, wanted to make a difference. With his friends, he organized two golf tournaments that in his remaining lifetime raised over $50,000 and enabled him to start his own Fund at the MCHF.
Spurred by his example, SWAT Members decided that they too could organize a fundraiser and make a difference, and thus the Tournament was born.
Over the past 33 years the Tournament has raised Hundreds of thousands of dollars solely dedicated to the cure of pediatric brain cancer, has grown in size and scope to become the largest and most significant Westmount charitable event and has raised awareness about this deadly disease way beyond our community’s borders.
All of you who have supported us loyally can be proud of the Tournament's fundraising achievements and with the efficiency with which these funds have been dispensed and leveraged out by the MCHF. In today's world there is not much we could achieve funding neuro-surgical equipment or advanced research on our own, however the Tournament's longevity, single minded purpose and credibility have enabled to use your funds to seedfund or kick start and complete many projects whose cost or scope would never been within our means: witness our very first contribution to the acquisition of the hospital's first laser surgery knife, to the first funding of the multi million JV research program between MCH and Ste Justine towards a cure for 'glioblastoma' the deadliest of brain cancers, to funding the first in house Microbiology Lab(Seemayer), to the feasibility study and implementation of the MCH's own palliative care unit, etc. etc...all of which have made major contributions towards the cure of pediatric cancer and have greatly enhanced children and parents' care and comfort.
For the second consecutive year, the Tournament will be awarding the HOPE FOR THE CHILDREN Trophy to recognize and honour the Tournament Team that has contributed the most for the Children in their fundraising efforts. Last year's winner, SHS (Selwyn) a newcomer Captained by Michael (Avo) Avedesian showed extraordinary dedication to the tournament's cause with an outstanding fundraising effort combined with a Silver Medal on the ice.
This Trophy acknowledges that the best Team on the ice may not be the one that has contributed the most and recognizes the winning value of the Team that will bring us ever closer to the realization of every afflicted Child's hopes.
Our hopes for the Children are heightened with every penny donated, many battles have been won, the war still endures, we count our victories but do not abandon our purpose
Dream of a world rid of the devastating mark of pediatric brain cancer, let us help you realize your dream.
Thank you for your generosity.
