Our Spokeschild

William is an extraordinary young boy with autism who, despite complex health challenges, demonstrates extraordinary courage and resilience. He and his mother have been on a journey of constant worry and renewed hope. Thanks to dedicated specialists and the unwavering support of our generous community, Will is now receiving the best possible care at The Children's.

As soon as he was born, mysterious symptoms appeared: no reflexes, inexplicable temperature rises, torticollis and hypersensitivity to touch. ‘We couldn't hold him in our arms without him crying, until I found a single position that suited him,’ confides Stéphanie, his mother. For eight years, tests and consultations followed, but the answers were slow in coming. It was even suggested that Will's symptoms were due to a need for attention. Yet his condition continued to deteriorate, plunging his mother into a spiral of anxiety and helplessness.

In 2016, a pediatrician linked Will's asthma to underlying allergies. This was a turning point, and the first signs of a diagnosis appeared. Shortly afterwards, Dr. Myers, a neurologist at The Children's, confirmed that Will suffers from a rare neurological disorder caused by a unique mutation in his DNA. This anomaly complicates the functions of his brain, affecting his nervous system, muscles and even several organs.

Will is treated in 12 of The Children's medical specialities. Each department plays an essential role: neurology to manage his pain, cardiology for his loss of consciousness, gastroenterology for his digestive problems, and many others. Your support helps fund the cutting-edge equipment and research needed to give children like Will a better quality of life.

Today, with the right treatment and a caring healthcare team, Will continues to overcome obstacles. He still faces daily challenges, but thanks to you, he is making progress.

For his mother, every step forward is a breath of hope. By helping The Children’s, you're doing more than just helping a child. You are giving Will and other young patients a chance to live with hope and dignity. Thank you for turning their challenges into victories every day.
